England Women ready to begin World Cup campaign against Wales | Game 1 Preview
The Rugby League World Cup 2026 is just around the corner, and England Women are preparing to kick off their campaign against Wales as they look to make a strong start on the international stage.
They will face Wales in Perth, Australia (K.O. 7.35am).
Every match of RLWC 2026 will be broadcast live on Premier Sports, with Stuart Barrow's side determined to open their tournament with a victory and build momentum heading into the challenges that lie ahead.
Wales are first up for England, before Barrow's side take on world champions Australia and Samoa in their remaining group fixtures.
England enter this year’s competition with plenty of optimism. Having reached the semi-finals on home soil at the previous World Cup, they narrowly missed out on a place in the final after suffering a 20-6 defeat to New Zealand.
That experience, coupled with the rising stars of the women's game in England, has helped shape a squad capable of competing with the very best.
Only Australia and New Zealand have ever lifted the Women's Rugby League World Cup trophy, but England will be aiming to close the gap on the sport's usual powerhouses.
Their most recent taste of international action brought further encouragement, with Barrow's side recording an impressive 38-4 victory over France in Toulouse. That performance showcased the attacking quality, as well as defensive resilience England will hope to carry into their World Cup campaign.
Standing in their way first are Wales, a familiar opponent for England Women.
The two sides have met regularly in recent years, with England emerging victorious in each of their last five encounters. The most recent meeting saw England run out emphatic 62-0 winners at The Gnoll in Neath.
However, World Cups can bring a unique pressure, and Wales will be eager to test their near neighbours on the biggest stage. England know they cannot afford to underestimate any opponent as they seek to begin their campaign on a winning note.
One of England's biggest strengths is the balance within the squad. A core of experienced internationals is complemented by a new generation of rising Women's Super League stars, while several players have also gained valuable experience competing in the NRLW in Australia.
That blend of youth and experience could prove crucial as the tournament progresses…
England Women Watch:
England captain Jodie Cunningham remains one of the side's most influential figures. A leader on and off the field, her experience and composure will be vital as England navigate the challenges of World Cup rugby league. One thing is guaranteed: Cunningham will put her body on the line and give everything for the shirt, ahead of her retirement.
Amelia Brown is another player who will attract attention after finishing as the top try-scorer in the Women's Super League. Brown heads into the World Cup in fine form and certainly knows her way to the try-line. Her only previous England appearance came against Wales, when she completed her debut with a hat-trick, and she will be hoping for more of the same this weekend.
In the halves, Georgia Roche brings valuable experience at the highest level. The Newcastle Knights playmaker has spent several seasons competing in the NRLW and her game management, kicking ability and creativity will be key for England throughout the tournament.
Jasmin Strange also arrives full of confidence and fresh after helping Sydney Roosters to NRLW Premiership success. Strange is set to make her England debut and will be eager to make a good impression.
Elsewhere, Wigan Warriors pair Izzy Rowe and Eva Hunter are among the exciting young talents in Barrow's squad. Both have impressed at club level and now have the chance to showcase their ability at a World Cup as they proudly pull on an England jersey.
As the World Cup journey begins, every game matters. Wales provide the first obstacle, but with a squad packed with both excellent experience and youth, Barrow's side will be confident of making the perfect start.
